Le mercredi 8 f\u00e9vrier 2012<\/p>\n

D\u00e9j\u00e0 deux semaines que j’ai quitt\u00e9 le froid et les bancs de neige de Qu\u00e9bec pour rejoindre Yves sur la RUS\u00c9E. Sans le savoir, j’avais bien choisie la date de mon envol\u00e9e, car le lendemain, une temp\u00eate d\u00e9lestait 30cm de nouvelle neige sur la capitale.<\/p>\n

C’est \u00e0 16h45 le 26 janvier, avec une heure de retard en raison d’une fuite de carburant \u00e0 l’a\u00e9roport de Philadelphie, que je suis descendue de l’avion en cherchant Yves des yeux. Le coquin! Il se cachait derri\u00e8re son nouvel iPad juste avant la sortie, filmant mon arriv\u00e9e. Nos retrouvailles ont surement attir\u00e9 l’attention des passants.<\/p>\n

Nous sommes rest\u00e9s quelques jours \u00e0 l’ancre dans Lindbergh Bay, tout pr\u00e8s de l’a\u00e9roport de Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI. Quelques jours qui m’ont rapidemement permis de changer de rythme, et de passer d’un extr\u00eame \u00e0 l’autre.<\/p>\n

Le lundi 30 janvier, apr\u00e8s la \u00ab clairance \u00bb (\u00e9crit ainsi \u00e0 la capitainerie de Port La Royale \u00e0 St. Martin), nous avons fait route vers Jersey Bay. Il s’agissait d’une escale technique pour faire des courses chez Budget Marine et chercher une voilerie pour r\u00e9parer le spinnaker, r\u00e9cemment \u00e9clat\u00e9. Suite \u00e0 une nuit agit\u00e9e dans cette baie ouverte \u00e0 la houle du large, nous avons travers\u00e9 le chenal pour passer quelques jours \u00e0 Christmas Cove sur l’\u00eele Greater Saint James, et c’est l\u00e0 que j’ai effectu\u00e9 ma premi\u00e8re plong\u00e9e avec le nouveau syst\u00e8me Brownie. Quoiqu’il n’y avait pas grand chose \u00e0 voir en termes de faune et de flore, ce fut encourageant d’y trouver des fonds marins d’une propret\u00e9 impeccable.<\/p>\n

Avant de quitter la r\u00e9gion le samedi 4 f\u00e9vrier, un arr\u00eat apn\u00e9e aux tangons de jour sur les rochers au large de Christmas Cove nous a permis de voir de superbes coraux et an\u00e9mones, ainsi que plusieurs bancs de poissons aux couleurs \u00e9clatantes. Avec ces images en t\u00eate, nous avons travers\u00e9 \u00e0 moteur, contre vent et mer, vers l’\u00eele de St John, o\u00f9 un tangon nous attendait dans la tr\u00e8s distingu\u00e9e Caneel Bay. Le lendemain, Yves avait planifi\u00e9 me faire conna\u00eetre Trunk Bay, laquelle lui rappelait d’excellents souvenirs de ses croisi\u00e8res en 1979 et 1981. Malheureusement, l’ancrage y \u00e9tait trop agit\u00e9, ce qui expliquait l’absence d’autres bateaux. Nous avons donc opt\u00e9 pour traverser vers les BVI, plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment \u00e0 Great Harbour de Jost Van Dyke (JVD), o\u00f9 nous savions que la houle ne nous incommoderait pas. Ce fut ma premi\u00e8re sortie \u00e0 voile, et elle s’est effectu\u00e9e sous de belles allures portantes pour une travers\u00e9e de moins d’une heure. Tout est \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 aux \u00celes Vierges!<\/p>\n

Nous avons pass\u00e9 deux jours \u00e0 JVD et fait deux longues randonn\u00e9es. La premi\u00e8re \u00e0 la magnifique White Bay avec son sable \u00e9clatant sur fond de mer turquoise et d’\u00e9cume blanche, effervescente comme des bulles de champagne, et la deuxi\u00e8me \u00e0 parcourir les deux-tiers de l’\u00eele par montagne et par vall\u00e9e \u2013 \u00e0 partir du niveau de la mer \u00e0 quelques 1 100 pieds d’altitude \u2013 nous arr\u00eatant ici et l\u00e0 pour admirer et photographier les sublimes paysages. Nos deux excursions se sont termin\u00e9es par une visite au c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Foxy’s, qui attire les voyageurs pour une session de WiFi, un T-Shirt souvenir, une conversation anim\u00e9e… et une bi\u00e8re bien froide!<\/p>\n

En quittant Great Harbour le 6 f\u00e9vrier, nous avions l’intention de faire un peu de plong\u00e9e dans le coin de Green Island avant de poursuivre vers une autre \u00eele de la cha\u00eene. Le temps \u00e9tait encore tr\u00e8s venteux, et la premi\u00e8re plong\u00e9e avec Brownie, entre Green Island et Little Jost Van Dyke, fut mouvement\u00e9e en raison de la houle prononc\u00e9e. C’\u00e9tait d\u00e9cevant, car nous pouvions constater que les fonds marins y sont tr\u00e8s beaux, mais l’eau \u00e9tait brouill\u00e9e par du sable et de la mati\u00e8re en suspension, et nous ne pouvions appr\u00e9cier les lieux \u00e0 leur juste valeur. Une deuxi\u00e8me plong\u00e9e prot\u00e9g\u00e9e de la houle par Little JVD s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9e plus agr\u00e9able, mais aussi moins vivante et moins color\u00e9e. Suivant cet arr\u00eat plong\u00e9e, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 attir\u00e9s par les eaux tranquilles sous la protection de Little JVD, o\u00f9 un seul bateau paressait \u00e0 l’ancre. Lecture, musique et BBQ dans le cockpit ont rempli la fin de cette magnifique journ\u00e9e. \u00c7a irait \u00e0 plus tard pour Peter Island et Tortola.<\/p>\n

Chaque fois que quelque chose me rappelle la date du jour, je dois me pincer pour m’assurer que je suis bien \u00e9veill\u00e9e. Surtout que j’ai v\u00e9cu deux mois d’hiver qu\u00e9becois avant de rejoindre Yves sur le bateau. Bien que le temps soit tr\u00e8s venteux, plut\u00f4t nuageux et le fond de l’air FRAIS depuis mon arriv\u00e9e aux Antilles (en d\u00e9pit des temp\u00e9ratures moyennes de 26C), il suffit de penser \u00e0 l’alternative pour appr\u00e9cier que nous vivons une situation de r\u00eave.<\/p>\n

It’s already been two weeks since I left the cold and the snowbanks of Quebec City to join Yves on RUS\u00c9E. I chose the date well, because the next day, 30 cm of new snow were dumped on the city.<\/p>\n

At 4:45 pm on January 26, an hour late because of a fuel leak in Philadelphia, I left the plane and scanned all around for Yves. I finally found him at the farthest exit, hiding behind his new iPad, filming my anxious search. Our reunion certainly attracted some attention.<\/p>\n

As Yves had promised me some serious R&R, we stayed a few days at anchor in Lindbergh Bay, right near the Charlotte Amalie airport in St. Thomas, USVI. It was certainly a change of rhythm; from one extreme to the other!<\/p>\n

On January 30, we headed for Jersey Bay for a technical stop. Yves had to go to Budget Marine and find a sailmaker to fix the recently exploded spinnaker. After a nasty night exposed to the ocean swells, we crossed the channel to spend a few days in the calm waters of Christmas Cove on Greater Saint James island. That’s where I did my first dive with our new Brownie Third Lung diving system. There wasn’t much to see in the bay in terms of fauna and flora, but it was encouraging to find such a pristine seabed.<\/p>\n

By February 4 we were ready to leave the St. Thomas area, but first, we did a snorkeling stop on the shoals near Christmas Cove and saw superb corals and anemones, as well as numerous kinds of multicolored fish. With these beautiful images in mind, we headed out against wind and sea towards the island of St John, where we picked up a mooring to spend the night in the very elegant Caneel Bay. The next day, Yves had planned to show me Trunk Bay, of which he has excellent memories from his cruises in 1979 and 1981. Unfortunately, it was very rolly, and we quickly understood why it was so deserted. So rather than spend the night in a washing machine, we decided to cross to the BVIs, secure in the knowledge that in Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke (JVD), we would be free of the ocean swells. It was my first time actually sailing since my arrival, and it was a lovely, though short-lived sail with beam winds. Everything is so close in the Virgin Islands!<\/p>\n

We spent two days in JVD and had a lovely trek each day. The first was to the magnificent White Bay with its blinding sand set against a turquoise sea, topped by frothy waves bubbling like champagne. The second had us hike two-thirds of the island’s mountains and valleys, from sea level to 1,100 feet above \u2013 stopping here and there to admire and photograph the sublime landscapes and seascapes. Both excursions ended with a visit to Foxy’s, the world-renowned restaurant and bar that attracts travellers for WiFi, a souvenir T-Shirt, animated conversation… and a good cold beer!<\/p>\n

Upon leaving Great Harbour on February 6, our intention was to make a diving stop at Green Island before heading on. The winds were still strong, and our first Brownie dive between Green Island and Little Jost Van Dyke was adventurous in the ocean swells. It was also disappointing, as the water was clouded with suspended sand and matter. We could tell that the site was lovely, but couldn’t fully appreciate it. A second dive under the protection of Little JVD was more pleasant, but also less lively and colorful. Afterwards, we were tempted by the sight of a lone sailboat at anchor a little further down the bay. Peter Island and Tortola could wait. A good book, music and a BBQ supper in the cockpit rounded out this magnificent day.<\/p>\n

Every time I am reminded of the current date, I have to pinch myself. The more so after having spent two months of \u00a0\u00bbreal\u00a0\u00bb winter before joining Yves on the boat. Although the winds have been strong, the skies often cloudy and the breezes FRESH since my arrival in the Caribbean (in spite of temperatures averaging 26C), I just have to remember the alternative to fully appreciate that we are living a dream.<\/p>\n
